Chapter 15 - Halloween

Mixing Darkness & Light

There is not much to say about celebrating this holiday. As a child, I allowed my son to dress up as a policeman, fireman, army soldier, or the like. Yes. I walked with him door to door. No, I didn’t know every house we went to. Yes, the entire family consumed enough sugar to throw us into a brain freeze sugar shock before it was even too dark out to see your hand before your face.

How did you celebrate Halloween?

What about Haunted Houses, hayrides, or scary movies? Do you participate?

Google AI Overview states:

The Bible does not mention Halloween by name because the holiday developed long after the biblical texts were written. However, the Bible does address themes related to Halloween, such as death, darkness, and spiritual forces, which are interpreted differently by Christians. Some see Halloween as a celebration that conflicts with Christian values due to its pagan origins and association with the occult, while others view it as a secular holiday for fun and community.

Here's a breakdown:

1. Origins of Halloween:

Halloween's roots are in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of summer and a time when the boundary between the living and the dead was believed to be blurred.

The Christian church later established All Hallows' Eve (October 31st) as the vigil for All Saints' Day (November 1st), a day to honor saints and the deceased.

Over time, these traditions merged, with some elements of Samhain influencing how All Hallows' Eve was celebrated.

2. Biblical Perspectives on Halloween:

Opposition: Some Christians oppose Halloween due to its pagan origins and association with practices condemned in the Bible, such as witchcraft, sorcery, and contacting the dead.

Innocent Fun: Other Christians see modern Halloween celebrations, like trick-or-treating and costumes, as harmless fun without any inherent connection to pagan beliefs.

Ambivalence: Some Christians take a more nuanced approach, acknowledging the holiday's history but focusing on the aspects they find personally meaningful or enjoyable, such as dressing up or spending time with family.

3. Key Biblical Concepts to Consider:

Darkness vs. Light: The Bible often contrasts darkness with light, with darkness representing evil and the absence of God, while light symbolizes truth and righteousness.

Pagan Practices: The Bible condemns practices associated with pagan religions, such as divination, necromancy, and idolatry.

Discernment: Christians are encouraged to discern between what is beneficial and harmful and to abstain from anything that could lead them away from God.

Love and Outreach: Some Christians argue that Halloween can be an opportunity to reach out to others with love and kindness, even in a secular context.

4. Conclusion:

There is no single biblical answer on how to view Halloween. The decision of whether or not to participate in Halloween activities is a personal one, based on individual conscience and understanding of biblical principles.
